Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about open and distance learning at Rivers State University.

What is open and distance learning?

It is a way of studying for a university degree without attending regular classes on campus. You learn mainly online, using study materials designed for independent learning, with support from e-tutors and short face-to-face residency periods each semester.

Is the ODL degree the same as the regular degree?

Yes. You study the same curriculum, are assessed to the same standard and receive the same Rivers State University degree.

Which programmes are available?

The pilot programme is B.Sc. Business Education. More programmes will be added after the pilot is approved. See Our Programmes.

What are the admission requirements?

For 100 level, at least five O’Level credits at not more than two sittings, including English Language and Mathematics and subjects relevant to the programme. Direct Entry and HND Top-Up routes are also available. See the Admissions page for details.

Do I need to write UTME?

No. The UTME examination is not required for admission into CODL programmes. You will, however, complete JAMB registration and regularisation as directed by the University.

When will admission start?

Admission will open after NUC approval of the pilot programme. The Centre plans two intakes a year, starting in March and September.

How do I apply?

Applications are made online through the CODL portal at rsu.studymateums.com once admission opens.

Is there an age limit?

You must be at least 16 years old. There is no upper age limit.

Can I work while I study?

Yes. The programmes are designed for working people. You study at times that suit you and attend residency periods of two to four weeks each semester.

Do I have to attend live classes?

Live classes are not compulsory for most courses. They are recorded so that you can watch them later.

What do I need to study online?

A computer, laptop or smartphone and access to the internet. The learning platform works on mobile phones, although some activities work best on a laptop or desktop computer.

How will I be assessed?

Three Tutor-Marked Assignments and online quizzes or discussions count for 40 per cent, and a supervised end-of-semester examination counts for 60 per cent. The pass mark is 40 per cent.

Can I defer my admission or take a break?

Yes. You may defer admission for up to one academic year, and enrolled learners may apply for leave of absence for up to two semesters.

Who do I contact if I have a problem?
